Bedtime Virus Warning

Because of the vary nature of this blog and too many of my relatives know I'm a computer geek, I get virus hoax emails all-the-time. This one, takes the cake. Funny!

If you receive an email entitled "Bedtimes" delete it IMMEDIATELY.

Do not open it. Apparently this one is pretty nasty. It will not only erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of your computer.

It demagnetizes the strips on ALL of your credit cards. It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on your VCR, and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt to play. It will program your phone auto dial to call only 0898 numbers.

This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank.

IT WILL CAUSE YOUR TOILET TO FLUSH WHILE YOU ARE SHOWERING.

It will drink ALL your beer.

FOR GOD'S SAKE, ARE YOU LISTENING??

It will leave dirty underwear on the coffee table when you are expecting company. It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine.

If the "Bedtimes" message opened in a Windows 95/98 environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, it will also refill your skim milk with whole milk.

******* WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. *******

And if you don't send this to 5000 people in 20 seconds, you'll fart so hard that your right leg will spasm and shoot straight out in front of you, sending sparks that will ignite the person nearest you.

Send this warning to everyone.

Lee Gomes: There is a new and insidious threat to the World Wide Web: a slowly rising tide of "original content" on Internet sites that is at best worthless, and at worst possibly even dangerously inaccurate.I should know; I've been writing some of the stuff myself.

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB114116587424585798.html

Vulnerability in Gmail

Anthony: I was recently attempting to mail some javascript code from my yahoo account to my gmail when I came across this vulnerability. Apparently javascript will run if it is withing the preview of the message. [cut] This vulnerability could be used to gather email addresses. Or even possibly to compromise the account.

http://ph3rny.blogspot.com/2006/03/vulnerability-in-gmail.html

Update: The exploit has been patched.

Splogs on MSN Spaces

It appears the sploggers are now targeting MSN Spaces. Not nearly in the same numbers as Blogspot, but it'll likely increase in time. If you find a splog on MSN Spaces, then simply scroll to the bottom of the blog and you'll find a link for Report Abuse (near the bottom right). You'll have to sign-in, provide your name and email address, choose type "Other" for the abuse type and put "splog" in the description. Let's hope Microsoft does better than Google.

Update: I got a personal reply from someone in MSN Support. The blog hasn't been removed yet, but they do seem to be taking this seriously. That's one better than Google.

AOL spam tax

Chris Pirillo: We wish to express our serious concern with AOL's adoption of Goodmail's CertifiedEmail, which is a threat to the free and open Internet. This system would create a two-tiered Internet in which affluent mass emailers could pay AOL a fee that amounts to an "email tax" for every email sent, in return for a guarantee that such messages would bypass spam filters and go directly to AOL members' inboxes.

http://chris.pirillo.com/blog/_archives/2006/2/28/1789138.html
