AOL Hometown is King of Splogs
Yesterday, I was overwhelmed with a massive blog comment spam attack that was using AOL Hometown blogs to spread link spam for porn sites. In the matter of a few hours, I received more blog comment spam from AOL Hometown splogs than all blog comment spam from splogs ever before. I have to say, the attack is clearly the fault of AOL Hometown. This splogger setup thousands, possible tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of splogs on AOL Hometown. He then set the templates of these splog to redirect visitors to his porn sites. AOL should be ashamed that such a blatantly simple attach succeeded. In fact, AOL has done nothing about these porn redirect splogs as they are still active.

I was compiling data for my next State of Blogosphere Search blog entry when I discovered that Technorati SERP spam is completely out of control.

Yahoo! is Search Hijacking your Browser

Andy Beal is reporting that Yahoo! is search hijacking your Web browser. This is a malware technique where they change the default setting your Web browser to use their search engine as the default.  Yahoo! claims no wrong. A little bit of Yahoo! karma down the drain :-(

Google Censors Socialtext and BadWare

Ross Mayfield is poking a little fun at Google who have classified their competititor Socialtext as badware, even though it's not.

Ross brings up an interesting website, StopBadware.org, whose goals are to stop the downloading of badware, a.k.a. malware. They intend on becoming a warehouse of research on malware. Noble causes are worth blogging, let's all reblog them and help them out.

Splogger Challenge Win!

A couple months ago, I added Elliot Back to my splogger challenge. Elliot is by far the biggest splogger in the blogosphere at the moment. He not only reblogs about 5% of my posts, but he also reblogs blog comment spam left on my blog.  I asked my readers to report his AdSense violation and I guess you did, because Google has disabled AdSense on at least one of his domains.

Update: I noticed that several of Elliot Back, splogger extra-ordinaires, blogs have been banned from AdSense. Totally cool!

Let’s get rid of sploggers
Robert Scoble says "Let’s get rid of sploggers." Really, but how? Just a month ago in my State of the Splogosphere entry, I noted that blogspot.com (umm Google) was cleaning up their act. In one month, blogspot.com has return to my #2 source of splog referrers only behind Elliot Back, the king of splogging. Elliot even splogs my blog comment spam. Even though I long ago reported Elliot's AdSense account, his account is still active. Now, it's likely that someone at Google will eventually read this or something similar, de-index Elliot and close his AdSense account, but then tomorrow their will be another Elliot. He'll make a small fortune for a few months before Google closes him down. So, he'll change his address, name and do it all over again. Maybe he'll switch to Chitika or Text Link ads. Oh wait, he's already got those. The problem is that nobody takes spam seriously. Not Google. Not Yahoo! Not the U.S. government. And not you. Saying "Let’s get rid of sploggers" is worthless without some real action.
